Making the most of the Cambridge Virtual Open Days

Making the most of the Cambridge Virtual Open Days

The virtual world of university events can be overwhelming. Where do you start when planning to join an event? How do you make the huge decision of where to study for the next three or four years without visiting your shortlist of universities? We’ve compiled some tips and advice to help you make sure you get the most out of virtual open days.

Virtual open days are a great way to look at your shortlisted universities while you are unable to visit in person. The University of Cambridge will be hosting Virtual Open Days in July and September 2021. You can find out about all things Cambridge by accessing pre-recorded presentations about our courses and departments, the application process, student life, student finance, and the Cambridge Colleges. You’ll also have the opportunity to ask current students and staff questions in Q&A sessions on our nominated ‘live’ days.

Tips for making the most of the Virtual Open Days

Ahead of the Open Days:

1. Check our website and start considering which courses and Colleges you’re interested in.  We recommend shortlisting around half a dozen Colleges to explore further during the Open Days.

2. Think about the questions you’d like to ask. Make sure to take notes of these so you don’t forget before the live events.

3. Create your own timetable! The on-demand content available during our virtual events allows you to decide when you want to watch a session and how many sessions you want to attend. Before the event, make sure you book some time in your diary to focus on the Open Days content and schedule in what you want to see. You’ll be able to view the full schedule of activities online before the event to help you to plan your time.

During the event:

4. Make sure to log into the live events at least five minutes early. Set an alarm so you don’t forget to log in on the day! Allow time to ensure you can access everything and resolve any technical glitches.

5. Explore our Virtual Tour. Even though you might not be able to visit, it’s important to have a look around. Can you see yourself studying and living here? Our Virtual Tour makes it easy for you to look around our Colleges and departments from the comfort of your own home.

6. Ask questions! The live sessions allow you to ask questions to our friendly staff and current students so you can get a real sense of life and study at Cambridge. There is no such thing as a silly question - and there are probably many other prospective students thinking the same thing, so ask our current students and staff what you want to know!

Some example questions to get you thinking:

Do you have any tips for applying to this course?

What is your favourite paper or practical in this course?

What does a typical week look like for a student taking this course?

What career paths do graduates of this course take?

What is your favourite part of being a student at Cambridge?

What is the accommodation like at this College?

What makes this College different to other Colleges, how do you decide which one is best for you?

What do students do outside of their studies for fun/to relax?

How competitive is this sport at Cambridge, can I do it just for fun?

I am interested in this society, what made you want to join?

To get the most out of a Q&A session, do some research in advance. You can find information about course structures and entry requirements online or in our Undergraduate Prospectus. Use the session to ask the things you can’t find out; the questions that will help you get a sense of what the University and Colleges are really like, and what it would be like to study here.

However, if you can’t find the answer to your question on our website, please do ask!

Lastly, make sure to keep an open mind. The search for the right university depends on where you think you’d perform the best in the subject you love. Gathering as much information as you can about each university and course you are interested in is key.
