Formula 1 will fund a new undergraduate student from an underrepresented background to study for an Engineering degree at the University of Cambridge. The scholarship will cover tuition fees and provide a maintenance grant for the four year duration of the course. Receipt of this award will not affect eligibility for a Cambridge Bursary. Eligibility criteria

To be eligible for the F1 scholarship, applicants must:

  1. Either identify as female (and have any category of ethnicity)
    or
    Identify as male, and have one of the following categories of ethnicity (which are currently underrepresented at the University compared to the UK HE sector)
    • Bangladeshi
    • Pakistani
    • Black African
    • Black Caribbean
    • Black Other
    • Mixed White/Black
  2. Have a confirmed place for entry to the University of Cambridge for a first undergraduate Engineering degree, and due to commence study in October 2021. (You can check the status of your offer on UCAS Track.)
  3. Be a UK student and have been assessed for fee status as 'home'. You were advised of your fee status in the offer letter issued to you earlier this year. If you are in doubt, please contact the Cambridge College that has offered you a place.
  4. Have applied to Student Finance (England, Scotland, Wales or Northern Ireland) for a tuition fee loan and maintenance loan, and have received confirmation that you have been assessed and will receive financial support. An income assessment must have been conducted and consent given to share the information with the University.

Application process

The application process for the scholarship is as follows:

  1. First of all, check your eligibility to apply. The panel will not consider any applications that do not meet eligibility criteria, and awards may be withdrawn if applicants are later found not to have met eligibility criteria or to have provided false information.
  2. You can make an application using the online application form, which will be open between 10 August and 27 August 2021. You will need to provide the following pieces of information:
    • Your full name, as provided on your UCAS form, and date of birth
    • Your UCAS Personal ID (the ten digit number you get when you register to UCAS Apply. You can find this on UCAS correspondence addressed to you)
    • Your ethnicity
    • Confirmation that you have applied and been fully income-assessed for support from the government through Student Finance (England, Scotland, Wales or Northern Ireland) for tuition fees and maintenance loans and that you have provided consent to share your information with the University.
    • A personal statement of up to 2,500 characters, outlining how you would benefit from the award and your interest in Formula 1
    • Confirmation that you give us permission to use all of the above information and that provided through your application to the University of Cambridge and to Student Finance so that we can assess you for an award.
  3. Applications must be submitted by no later than Friday 27 August 2021. Late applications will not be considered.
  4. Applications will be ranked using:
    • household income data provided by you to Student Finance
    • indicators of higher education participation and socio-economic disadvantage based on the school you attended and the postcode in which you live, which will be drawn from your UCAS application
    • your personal statement
  5. The selection panel will then take a final decision on which student will receive the award. Applicants will receive notification of the outcome by mid-September 2021.
