Entry requirements

The Gaokao is regarded as suitable preparation for Cambridge. The Gaokao scores of successful applicants will vary from province to province and year to year. As a guideline, successful applicants will usually have scores in the top 0.1% of those taking the Gaokao in their province. In addition to the total score, Cambridge Colleges will pay close attention to individual subject scores and scores in the Senior High School Examinations (Xueye Shuiping Kaoshi; previously the Huikao). The Xueye Shuiping Kaoshi alone are not regarded as suitable preparation for Cambridge.

Applicants studying for the Gaokao are encouraged to undertake additional study outside of their school qualifications. This might include, for example, relevant science Olympiads or College Board SAT I or II; or Advanced Placement Tests.

Gaokao offers are made on an individual basis, and we recommend that you contact the College to which you wish to apply for further advice and guidance.

Other Qualifications

For more details on applying with College Board qualifications, a full IB Diploma or three or more A Levels, please see the relevant sections on our Entrance Requirements page.

Applicants also often apply as affiliated applicants having completed a first degree. In some circumstances, our Colleges may consider an application from a student who is undertaking the first year of an undergraduate degree at a university outside the UK. We recommend that you contact the College to which you wish to apply for further advice and guidance.

English language requirements

If English is not your first language then any offer made is likely to include English language requirements. See which English language qualifications we accept on our English language requirements page.

Fees and finance

As an international student, fees vary between different courses. Limited financial support may be available from the Cambridge Commonwealth, European and International Trust, or College funds.

If you're unsure as to whether your fee status would be Home or international, please see our fee status page.

Applying

If you think you may meet the entry requirements that we require from your country, we would suggest that you familiarise yourself with how to apply to Cambridge. There is also specific information for international applicants and an application timetable with dates and deadlines relevant for international students.

Applicants from PR China are welcome to apply with the assistance of the Ambright Education Group (http://ceis.ambrightgroup.com/). Ambright applicants will be required to take written, subject-dependent Aptitude Scholastic Tests in Mathematics, Physics and English at centres in China. These are used, when available, as part of the selection criteria for the China (Shanghai) overseas interview scheme.

Non-Ambright PR China applicants are also welcome to apply to be interviewed in Shanghai or in Cambridge.

Admissions Assessments

Please also refer to the information about admission assessments. If the course you’re applying for requires you to take a pre-interview written assessment, you must be registered in advance for the assessment. The assessment centre where you’ll take the assessment must register you (you can’t register yourself) by the relevant assessment registration deadline.

Interviews

Interviews are held in China (Shanghai) as well as in Cambridge and a number of other overseas locations. Please refer to the information on our overseas interviews page for full details.

International Events

The University of Cambridge attends some events overseas where our representatives will be happy to chat with you and answer any questions you may have about applying to and studying at the University. To find out when we are visiting your country please visit the International Events webpage.
