Founded in 1800, Downing is both the newest of the ‘old’ Colleges and the oldest of the ‘new’, set in a spacious landscape of lawns, trees and gardens in the heart of Cambridge. We welcome applications from anyone with talent and commitment to join our friendly, academic community.

Accommodation

We guarantee accommodation in College for 3 years of undergraduate study. If a course extends beyond 3 years, accommodation may also be available (but is not guaranteed).

All undergraduate accommodation is on the main College site. This is unusual in Cambridge and helps to build a strong sense of
community characteristic of Downing.
All rooms are of single occupancy with internet connection.
Around half of the rooms are en suite and several are adapted for students with access needs.
All accommodation has access to kitchen facilities.
Our on-site laundry facilities are free to use.

Our facilities include:

the well-stocked Maitland Robinson Library (open 24 hours a day)
the magnificent Howard Theatre
the Heong Gallery
chapel choir and with frequent concerts and recitals
excellent sporting facilities including a gym, tennis and basketball/netball courts
off-site sports ground and boathouse by the river with indoor rowing tank
student common rooms and student bar

Location and student life

Home to about 465 undergraduates, 530 graduates and 53 Fellows, all supported by more than 130 staff, Downing is an inclusive and welcoming place that encourages bright students from all backgrounds to apply. We accept students in all subjects.

Our highly-respected teaching and research staff are dedicated to helping students realise their full academic potential. Our academics are at the forefront of their respective fields. Our pastoral support system – including personal Tutors, and a support team led by our Head of Student Wellbeing – helps students to navigate their way through College life.
