The Shadowing Scheme is Cambridge SU’s flagship Access Scheme and aims to demystify some of the myths and misconceptions surrounding life at Cambridge.
During the Scheme, students (who are referred to as ‘Shadows’) are paired with a current undergraduate (their ‘Mentor’) studying a subject they are interested in. They will attend events organised by current students about college life, their academic interests, and sports and societies, as well attending contact hours with their Mentor.
Living in Cambridge and ‘shadowing’ a student for 3 days gives an authentic sense of the community and everyday life at Cambridge. Shadows will leave the Scheme with knowledge and experience of Cambridge and the admissions process, and will be able to make an informed decision of whether they would be interested in studying at the University of Cambridge.
It is aimed towards state-educated Year 12 students (S5 in Scotland, Year 13 in Northern Ireland) who are on track to achieve highly in their A Levels (or equivalent) and are from under-represented backgrounds, with little family history of attending university, who go to schools where few students progress to the most selective universities. The Scheme is also open to mature students – those who will be 21 or over at the time they start their course at university.
There are three separate programmes:
- Thursday, 26 - Saturday, 28 January 2023
- Thursday, 2 - Saturday, 4 February 2023
- Thursday, 9 - Saturday, 11 February 2023
Applications to be on the Shadwoing Scheme open on 25 August 2022.
