Undergraduate Study

The Cambridge Colleges conduct a series of overseas interview schemes. For 2020 entry (or deferred entry in 2021), it's anticipated that these will take place in Singapore, Malaysia (Kuala Lumpur), PR China (Shanghai), Hong Kong, India (Mumbai), Canada (Toronto) and the USA (New York, via video-conferencing software). Candidates based in a location where there is an overseas interview team would ordinarily be expected to apply for an interview in that location, according to eligibility (details below). Candidates in these locations requesting interview in Cambridge (instead of an interview in their location) should clearly outline their reasons for this in section A3.1 of the COPA. Please check the visa requirements for the country where you are seeking an interview, and take this into account when choosing your preferred location.

Overseas interviewers are academic experts with a broad range of subject expertise and experience in admissions, and are appointed by the Colleges of the University of Cambridge to interview applicants on their behalf. For more information on interviews see our main Interviews pages. Where Directors of Studies require further information or clarification from a candidate, the College may arrange a structured follow-up conversation with that candidate by Skype or similar. In subjects where interview in Cambridge is recommended, a more formal second interview may be offered.

If you're selected for an interview outside the UK, you'll be required to pay an interview fee. The fee for overseas interviews to be held in 2019 will be £150 (£80 for the New York Remote Interview Scheme scheme). Further information on this payment and when to pay it will then be provided in the correspondence inviting you to attend an interview.

If you'd like to be considered for interview overseas then your COPA, UCAS application, SAQ, and (if required) Transcript must be submitted by the relevant deadlines.

Throughout the admissions process, Admissions Tutors and Interviewers will be assessing your English language skills as well as your academic ability; you will need a good standard of spoken English to take part in the interviews. Please check our English language requirements page.

Admissions Assessments

  • Most applicants are required to take a subject-specific written admission assessment, either pre-interview or at-interview, depending on the course applied for. There is a registration process for the pre-interview assessments and it is the responsibility of the applicant to ensure they are registered as a candidate by a test centre and by the relevant deadline. You can find more information on the Admissions assessments page. Please note that for some overseas interviews locations, pre-interview assessments may take place after your interview. In this situation, your written assessment will still be considered by your Cambridge College along with your overseas interview report.
  • At-interview admissions assessments will usually take place in the same week as interviews in that country - registration is not required. At-interview assessment details are normally sent to shortlisted applicants together with details of their interview.

Please check the ‘information for EU/overseas applicants’ sections on the pre-interview assessments and at-interview assessments pages for more information.
