Undergraduate Study

The Cambridge Colleges conduct a series of overseas interview schemes. For 2019 entry (or deferred entry in 2020) interviews will take place in Canada (Toronto), PR China (Shanghai), Hong Kong, India (Mumbai), Malaysia (Kuala Lumpur), Singapore and the USA (New York, via video-conferencing software). Applicants are welcome to apply to be interviewed in Cambridge or overseas, depending on their preference and eligibility (details below). Please check the visa requirements for the country where you are seeking an interview, and take this into account when choosing your preferred location.

Overseas interviewers are academic experts with a broad range of subject expertise and experience in admissions, and are appointed by the Colleges of the University of Cambridge to interview applicants on their behalf. For more information on interviews see our main Interviews pages. Where Directors of Studies require further information or clarification from a candidate, the College may arrange a structured follow-up conversation with that candidate by Skype or similar. In subjects where interview in Cambridge is recommended, a more formal second interview may be offered.

If you're selected for an interview outside the UK, you'll be required to pay an interview fee. The fee for overseas interviews to be held in 2018 will be £150 (£80 for the New York Remote Interview Scheme scheme). Further information on this payment and when to pay it will then be provided in the correspondence inviting you to attend an interview.

If you'd like to be considered for interview overseas then your COPA, UCAS application, SAQ, and (if required) Reference and Transcript must be submitted by the relevant deadlines.

Throughout the admissions process, Admissions Tutors and Interviewers will be assessing your English language skills as well as your academic ability; you will need a good standard of spoken English to take part in the interviews. Please check our English language requirements page.

Admissions Assessments

Most applicants are required to take a subject-specific written admission assessment, either pre-interview or at-interview, depending on the course applied for. You can find more information on the Admissions assessments page.

  • For 2019 entry, the pre-interview admissions assessments will be taken on 31 October 2018. If you will be taking a pre-interview written assessment overseas, you must check the Cambridge Assessment Admissions Testing website, as the scheduled start times for international centres may vary.
  • All candidates applying for Medicine must be registered with their test centre by 1 October to take the BMAT.
  • Applicants for courses other than Medicine with a pre-interview assessment must be registered with their test centre by 15 October (or by 30 September if special access arrangements are required). Please note that open centres may set an earlier deadline for accepting entries, and it is your responsibility to check if this applies at your centre.
  • Please note that for some overseas interviews locations, pre-interview assessments may take place after your interview. In this situation, your written assessment will still be considered by your Cambridge College along with your overseas interview report.
  • At-interview admissions assessments will usually take place in the same week as interviews in that country - registration is not required. At-interview assessment details are normally sent to shortlisted applicants together with details of their interview.
  • For Computer Science and Mathematics applicants interviewed overseas, a written assessment will be administered by the relevant overseas interview team. Both consist of mathematical problems and will last for 90 minutes. Your written assessment will be made available to your Cambridge College, along with your overseas interview report.

Please check the ‘information for EU/overseas applicants’ sections on the pre-interview assessments and at-interview assessments pages for more information.
