Conducting Workshop for 14 to 18-year-olds

Saturday 20 September 2025, 10:30am to 5:00pm

Join Downing’s Director of Music, Louisa Denby, and our Ambassador for Music and former Master of Music at Westminster Cathedral, Martin Baker, for a day’s conducting workshop in the tranquil surroundings of the College Chapel.

Do I need to have lots of prior experience?

You will need to be able to read music fluently, but any level of experience (including none at all!) in conducting is welcome.

Do I need to prepare anything in advance?

We will send you a short piece of choral music to learn before the day, with suggestions as to the sort of questions you should ask yourself in order to help you prepare for the workshop.

What will happen on the day?

After registration (between 10:30am and 11:00am), there will be three sessions, including how to beat different time signatures, work on rhythmic proficiency, gestural communication, and rehearsal technique. We will break for refreshments mid-morning and mid-afternoon, with a longer break for lunch. At 4:15pm there will be a chance to show parents/carers what we have been working on, with a short informal performance.

Who will I be conducting?

Your fellow participants will form a choir for the day, and there will also be student volunteers present to help you with anything you need.

How much does it cost?

The event is free for everyone.

How do I apply?

Please complete this form by Friday 12 September, and we will be in touch with you as soon as possible with further details.
